This article refers to an event which took place on, or until, 26 June 2002 Moldy Peaches ROTTEN BATCH!! Paul Fogarty cant get enough of those Ker-azzy kids The Moldy Peaches. Its not often one finds oneself commenting I thought the guys with the rabbit costume and The Robin Hood outfit were way better, especially when one has witnessed the most hyped young rock band of the last half decade. Yet this time last year, The Strokes had played a show which belied that status, and The Moldy Peaches won over a capacity Music Centre crowd with their inimitable brand of strange folk stylings. Dressed in the aforementioned, they were a laugh riot, singing of sucking dick for ecstasy and questioning who exactly had got the crack while trying to keep a straight face. Theyre a blast and by now, you should be in love with them. Their debut self titled LP was a hotch potch collection of songs the duo, Adam Green and Kimya Dawson, had been writing since Adam was a fresh faced thirteen year old (he's now 21) which somehow made a lovably cohesive whole, filled with silly, childish humour and frail humanity, with highlights including a 14 year old Adams attempt at rapping, On Top, the gorgeous Unlucky No 9 and the anarchic scream of consciousness Whos Got The Crack?. Speaking to Adam Green today, the first thing he wants to get straight is that The Moldy Peaches are not a duo. "It seems to be the perception since we did that big Strokes tour, but it was just the two of us because we didnt have the money to do it with the six piece. The album was recorded on multi track with me and Kimya doing everything, but Moldy Peaches has always been a band". So the band Irish fans will see later this month will feature the songwriting duo on vocals only, backed by a four piece band of friends and reprobates from the ever so cool Anti Folk movement in NYC. They have recently released their first ensemble effort, a Double A Side with the sweet County Fair and irrepressible innuendo and downright dirty talk of Rainbow, whose nod to the didgeridoos essential place in the world of teen lust makes it a contender for single of the year. " I think thats a really good indication of what this live band sounds like. Weve just recorded another new song with the whole lot and its sounding great". Theyre a busy lot, with each member of the band issuing their own solo albums. " I suppose most people would only have heard of myself and Kimyas records because of the Rough Trade thing, but we all do stuff. The thing is that I always write songs when Im on my own, so does Kimya, but it wont be The Moldy Peaches because thats a totally collaborative thing". Apart from winning over a multitude of people, another pleasant result of their short trip to Ireland was a meeting of minds with our very own David Kitt, who confesses to being a huge fan and is signed to the same label, Rough Trade. They joined him onstage at an afternoon gig in Whelans, and are currently undertaking a month long European tour with him. "Hes just a cool guy and a really talented musician. We love him, man". And if you go see Moldy Peaches next week, youll probably love them too. Man. Moldy Peaches play Whelans, Wexford St on Tuesday June 25th. |
